5 Essential Oil Perfume Recipes (2024)

These 5 essential oil perfume recipes smell beautifully and provide you with aromatherapy benefits while avoiding the toxic chemicals found in most conventional perfumes!

I don’t wear conventional perfume very often for three reasons:

1. It’s so dang expensive.

2. The smell sometimes irritates my nose and can even give me a headache.

3. I know it contains harmful chemicals. I’ve thought in the past about making my own essential oil perfume, but the thought of the research and having to buy special supplies felt daunting to me. I’m sure I’m not the only one, so I finally decided to research essential oil perfume recipes and write a post about it!

The Secret Toxic Chemicals in Perfumes

Perfume companies are allowed to withhold information about what chemicals they are using in their products, supposedly for the sake of “protecting trade secrets.” But recent research by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has shown that on average, any given fragrance product contains 14 secret and undisclosed chemicals.

Here’s a quote from EWG:“Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety in personal care products.” EWG adds that some of the undisclosed ingredients are chemicals “with troubling hazardous properties or with a propensity to accumulate in human tissues.” Examples include diethyl phthalate, a chemical found in 97 percent of Americans and linked to sperm damage in human epidemiological studies, and musk ketone, which concentrates in human fat tissue and breast milk.

Yikes.

Thank goodness, I found out that making your own DIY essential oil perfume is actuallyextremely simple and I wish I had started it long ago! Essential oil perfume recipes are not only entirely non-toxic and chemical-free, but they also have amazing aromatherapy benefits! Plus, you can save a lot of money by making essential oil perfume at home.

I write more about how to eliminate toxins from all your cosmetics in my post!

If you would like to create your own essential oil perfume blend or already know a combination of essential oils that you would like to use, here are some general guidelines to help you:
  • Use 10-15 drops of essential oils per 10 ml roll on bottle. I recommend using a dark glass bottle, because it protects the essential oils from being damaged by sunlight.
  • Fill the rest of the bottle with a carrier oil, such as Fractionated Coconut Oil, or Almond Oil.
  • Consider your fragrance blend’s base, middle, and top notes. You should add the base oils first, followed by the middle, then the top. You will smell the top notes first, then the middle, and finally the base.Wellness Mama gives ideas for each type.

With any essential oil perfume recipe, remember these two things:

  1. Shake the perfume before each use to ensure it is blended.
  2. Don’t spray it on your clothing. Since it is made with oil, it can stain.
