Eagles News: Philadelphia is "one obvious place to look" for a top remaining free agent (2024)

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Why NFL Coaches and Front-Office Staff Hate the Proposed Offseason Overhaul - SI
From Memo (@memopau_arcadia): Where do you see Justin Simmons landing? Memo, I think it’ll be a contender, and probably one that he’d have some background with. The Philadelphia Eagles are one obvious place to look, since Simmons’s old coach, Vic Fangio, is there, as is his old position coach, Christian Parker. I guess you could say the same for Ejiro Evero with the Carolina Panthers, since they have a need there—I just don’t think the Panthers would appeal to Simmons. The Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams run similar schemes as well, that’d fit Simmons. That said, the one that really intrigues me, that might not make sense (for financial reasons) would be the Niners. Brandon Staley is now there working with new defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. Staley was with Simmons on the Denver Broncos in 2019, so he’s got a good idea of what the four-time All-Pro brings to the table. And the Niners could use a center fielder like Simmons on the back end to complement the rugged Talanoa Hufanga at safety. The Baltimore Ravens are the other team that makes sense to me, if only because they’ve been big on acquiring smart, professional third-contract vets over the past half decade or so.

Safeties. 1) Justin Simmons, 2) Quandre Diggs, 3) Micah Hyde, 4) Jamal Adams, 5) Eddie Jackson. This group is filled with a lot of guys who will be day 1 starters if brought in today. Simmons is a shock, he can play the post and be extremely versatile in a quarters-style defense. Diggs is a high energy player who always finds himself around the ball. Adams catches a lot of flack, but for a team who runs a lot of simulated pressures and blitzes Adams can be really fun. Hyde is on the record saying it’s the Bills or retire.

Eagles OTA Practice Notes: Isaiah Rodgers looks good - BGN
The aforementioned Isaiah Rodgers has looked good through two media-attended OTA practices. He made a play on the ball last week and he flashed again on Thursday with the biggest highlight of the day. Rodgers perfectly jumped a route on a short throw by Hurts for a pick six. A year off from football clearly hasn’t prevented Rodgers from shining. There’s plenty of offseason left for things to change but, as it currently stands, he’s seriously challenging to start at cornerback across from Slay.

Rodgers was suspended for all of 2023, but he worked hard so he would be ready for this year. He talked about mirroring his workouts to an NFL schedule. Football players are creatures of habit. I think having a set schedule that he was used to helped him to stay focused and to keep the right mindset. Rodgers had his career snatched from him (it was his fault) and now he’s got a chance to get it back. He seems very driven. By all reports, Rodgers has looked good so far. It is still way early, but we could see Rodgers and Slay as the starting CBs. That would give Quinyon Mitchell and Kelee Ringo more time to develop. Cooper DeJean could stay focused on learning to play in the slot.

One reason each NFC team won’t make the playoffs in 2024 - PFF
Philadelphia Eagles: Young defensive backs aren’t ready for bigger roles. The Eagles’ roster is loaded, and despite the late-season collapse in 2023, they should be one of the top teams in the conference again in 2024. They will likely rely on a pair of rookies to play a significant role in the secondary, though. While Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean were both top prospects, just 17 rookie cornerbacks since 2006 have managed to earn an 80.0-plus grade in Year 1.

We Tracked Down Kylie Kelce’s Shore Bully. She Apologized — Eventually - PhillyMag
A couple of hours after I left the store, a publicist representing the Goldbergs reached out to me and sent me the following statement: “In a heated moment, I said things that were out of character for me and that I regret and for that, I am sorry. Although I apologized directly to the Kelce family on Saturday, I want to publicly apologize to them, and our community. My anger, and my actions, are not who I am, and certainly not indicative of the welcoming community of Margate. As an adult and proud member of my community, I should have recognized and respected their right to privacy from the onset. I am deeply appreciative of the grace and understanding shown to me by the Kelces and wish them nothing but the best.”

Tyreek Hill has been trying to get a new deal since 2023 season ended - PFT
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the effort to address Hill’s contract began after the 2023 season ended. That’s when Hill had 1,799 receiving yards, despite a late-season ankle injury that derailed what seemed to be a likely 2,000-yard campaign. The effort intensified after Eagles receiver A.J. Brown got his latest new contract. Brown got his prior contract when Hill got his current one, and Brown had three years left on his contract. Like Hill does.

Cowboys news: Mike McCarthy comments on Micah Parsons’ absence from OTAs - Blogging The Boys
“I think anytime you have a chance to be together, it’s an opportunity to improve, whether it’s in the mental realm, the physical realm, which is limited obviously this time of year, and the emotional connection and so forth,” McCarthy said. “But, you know, it’s a long year. Training camp is really the heightened focus for all of that. But yeah it’s definitely an opportunity that’s been missed.”

Giants’ assistant GM Brandon Brown shows why he is headed toward running a team of his own - Big Blue View
When Giants’ GM Joe Schoen hired Brown away from the Philadelphia Eagles, where he had been director of player personnel, Schoen said he hoped to put Brown in a position to become a GM one day. It certainly seems like Brown is on his way. He interviewed twice in January for the Carolina Panthers GM job that eventually went to Dan Morgan. He also had a pair of interviews with the Los Angeles Chargers for the GM job that went to Joe Hortiz. Listen to his interviews or read what he says and you get a pretty good idea why Brown seems to be headed toward running a team of his own. Brown addressed a wide variety of topics on Thursday. His explanations of how and why the Giants do certain things are always informative. Let’s get to some of what Brown talked about.

Daily Slop - 30 May 24: Don’t plan on another Washington Commanders name change anytime soon - Hogs Haven
Harris was asked Wednesday after a Washington Post poll indicated most D.C.-area sports fans said they either dislike or hate the Commanders’ name. “Everybody has an opinion about the name. Some good, some bad, some in the middle. And I think that we have a lot of work to do and so that name issue is going to be on the side for now until we can get things going,” she said. “I had a whole day out in the community, and I kept referring to the team as the Commanders,” Harris said. “And you know what? Sounds pretty good to me. So, for now, it’s the Commanders.
