  1. RF lens: The radio frequency (RF) lens stacked-ring RF ion guide captures and focuses ions into a tight beam after they exit the ionization source, increasing sensitivity. Large variable spacing between electrodes enables better pumping efficiency and improved ruggedness. Bent flatapole ion guide reduces noise by preventing neutrals and high-velocity clusters from entering the quadrupole.
  2. AABG: Reducing noise and extending maintenance intervals, the Advanced Active Beam Guide (AABG) enables intelligent ion beam management for high flux ion sources.
  3. Quadrupole Mass Filter with AQT: The mass filter improves precursor selection and ion transmission for more accurate quantitation of low abundance analytes in complex matrices. It also offers variable precursor ion isolation width selection from 0.4 Da to full mass range.
  4. Orbitrap mass analyzer: The Orbitrap mass analyzer offers unprecedented high resolution accurate mass (HRAM) analysis of ions as a function of their rotational frequencies; these data are converted to mass spectra using fast Fourier transforms (FFTs).
  5. HCD cell: Ions pass from the nitrogen-filled C-trap into this multipole collision cell and undergo fragmentation. Afterwards, HCD voltage is increased and the ions are transferred back to the C-trap, to be injected into the Orbitrap for detection.

FAQs

How does Q Exactive Orbitrap work? ›

How does Q Exactive Orbitrap work? The Q Exactive Orbitrap operates by combining a quadrupole mass filter with an Orbitrap mass analyzer. The process begins with ionization, where molecules are converted into ions using techniques like Electrospray Ionization (ESI) or Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI).

What is the Orbitrap mass spectrometry? ›

The orbitrap is a MS that is based on the separation of ions in an oscillating electric field. It consists of an outer barrel-like electrode and a central spindle-like electrode along the axis to which electrostatic fields are applied.

What is the difference between Q exactive and Q exactive plus? ›

The Q Exactive Plus MS identifies significantly more proteins than the Q Exactive MS, particularly at lower sample amounts. Protein identification, is a fundamental research task. The Q Exactive Plus mass spectrometer delivers increased sensitivity and precision for protein identification.

What is Qtrap mass spectrometry? ›

The Q Trap mass spectrometer is a unique tandem mass spectrometer which is capable of functioning as either a dedidated triple quadrupole mass spectrometer for quantitative workflows or as a highly sensitive linear ion trap mass spectrometer for qualitative workflows, since the hybrid mass spectrometer has MS3 ...

What are the advantages of Orbitrap? ›

Key benefits of Orbitrap mass spectrometry

Orbitrap technology drives high-resolution, accurate-mass (HRAM) data, generating incredibly high resolution measurements of up to 500,000 FWHM (with the option of achieving up to 1,000,000 FWHM) at m/z 200.

What is the working principle of Orbitrap? ›

Each packet contains a multitude of ions of different velocities spread over a certain volume. These ions move with different rotational frequencies but with the same axial frequency. This means that ions of a specific mass-to-charge ratio spread into rings which oscillate along the inner spindle.

How fast is the Q exactive scan? ›

The scan rate can be as high as 140,000 (1.5 Hz) and the mass accuracy is > 1 ppm upon calibration.

What is the mass range of Q exactive? ›

Construction details of the Q Exactive HF.

The covered mass range in the Orbitrap analyzer is m/z 50–6000.

What is Q in mass spectrometry? ›

As the name implies, it consists of four cylindrical rods, set parallel to each other. In a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) the quadrupole is the mass analyzer – the component of the instrument responsible for selecting sample ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z).

What are the advantages of Qtrap? ›

QTRAP technology delivers equivalent or better data, and more of it, than you can capture on an ordinary triple quadrulpole system. You can combine all the MRM sensitivity of a triple quad, with a multi-functional linear ion trap (LIT), for unique and powerful workflows.

What is the difference between Qtof and Qtrap? ›

QTOF and QTRAP MS instruments have different capabilities, but both allow you to do screen phenolic compounds and confirm their structure by MSMS. QTOF has the advantage of higher resolution and QTRAP has the advantage of allowing targeted screening which may be helpful for phenolic compound screening. Hope this helps.

What does mass spectrometry reveal? ›

Typically, mass spectrometers can be used to identify unknown compounds via molecular weight determination, to quantify known compounds, and to determine structure and chemical properties of molecules.

How does the Qtof work? ›

QTOF Technology

Orthogonal acceleration follows the quadrupolar units and divides the permanent stream of ions in discrete packages being shot into the flight tube. At its top end they get reflected for improved resolving power and focusing onto the detector multi-channel plate.

How does Q trap work? ›

The enhanced MS scan is the standard QTRAP® MS scan where ions are transmitted from the source (Turbo V® or IoDrive®) through the RF mode quadrupoles into the ion trap. The ion trap is filled, and the ions are scanned out axially to the detector.

What is the Q exactive PRM method? ›

PRM methodology uses the quadrupole of the Q Exactive or Fusion mass spectrometer to isolate a target precursor ion, then fragments the targeted precursor ion in the collision cell, and then detects the resulting product ions in the Orbitrap mass analyzer.

How does ion trap mass analyzer work? ›

Using an oscillating RF potential and a superimposed DC potential, ions are trapped between the electrodes. By applying a varying RF potential, ions with different m/z are ejected selectively and then detected. The 2D ion trap, is also called as linear trap, the RF potential is used at both ends to trap the ions.
