Del Dios school class to hold fair

ESCONDIDO — Peer Leaders Uniting Students, a class at Del DiosMiddle School, will host a cultural fair from 2:45 to 4 p.m. May15. The event will feature booths that were designed by studentsrepresenting countries they researched, food, music and fashion.Breax, an all-positive hip-hop band, will perform. Peer Leaders isa statewide organization dedicated to fostering an environmentwhere an individual can feel a healthy sense of belonging. Theschool is at 1400 W. 9th Ave. Call 323-539-7372.

Open house slated at preschool

ESCONDIDO — Ascension Lutheran Preschool will hold an openhouse from 6 to 8 p.m. May 20 at 1140 N. Midway Drive. Openings areavailable for children ages 3 to 5. Interested parents areencouraged to visit the classroom and meet the staff. Call760-747-4276.

Adventist Academy participated in clean-up

ESCONDIDO — A team of 27 high school students and six teachersfrom Escondido Adventist Academy took part in a day of communityoutreach April 29. Working with the city of Escondido’s recreationdepartment, Interfaith Community Services and the EscondidoCommunity Child Development Center, the students and their sponsorscleaned bleachers, painted fences and groomed the communitysoftball fields at Kit Carson Park. Another group worked at theEscondido Sports Center painting the gates, cleaning the indoorsoccer arenas, power-washing the bleachers, and cleaning the hockeyrinks. Other groups prepared transitional housing for seniorcitizens, and cleaned and organized storage units for the EscondidoCommunity Child Development Center. Call 760-746-1800.

It was all Greek to students on April 24

ESCONDIDO — Students in grades K-8 celebrated “Ancient Greece”on campus at The Classical Academy Escondido on April 24. Thecampus was transformed into the ancient civilization. The eventfeatured traditional food, Olympic games, music, and arts andcrafts. The educational experience gave the students theopportunity to participate in activities while studying Greece. Thetuition-free Academy public charter school offers a personalizedlearning program that blends classroom time with independent study.Enrollment applications are now being accepted for the 2009-10school year. Annual Farm Day has arrived

ESCONDIDO — San Pasqual High School agriculture students willhost an Elementary Farm Day featuring a visit by Escondido MayorLori Holt Pfeiler at 9 a.m. May 13. This an annual event, wherekindergarten and first-grade students from around North Countyvisit the agriculture department to learn about the program’sgardens, orchard and animals. Visiting students will have theopportunity to plant a flower in the green house.

Nine teachers receive honor

NORTH COUNTY — Students from Escondido, Valley Center and SanMarcos high school districts honored nine extraordinary teachers,one from each high school, on May 7 during the annual Crystal AppleAwards ceremony. The event was held at the Church of Jesus Christof Latter-day Saints in Escondido. Crystal Apple Awards are givento outstanding teachers nominated by high school students who arealso members of the church.

This year’s recipients: Kyle Billings of Mission Hills HighSchool, Adriana Carrillo of Escondido High School, Michelle Clarkof High Tech High North County School, Howard Fraser of ValleyCenter High School, Michelle Hammack of Orange Glen High School,Christy-Anna Martinez of Escondido Adventist Academy, Robert Rea ofEscondido Charter High School, Brady Stout of San Marcos HighSchool, and Laura Whitten of San Pasqual High School.

Youth supports orphanage by sellingbracelets

VISTA — Rancho Buena Vista High School junior Kyla McClure andother youths in her group raised $3,000 recently by selling YUDABands — handmade leather and coconut bracelets from Guatemala –to build a chicken coop for an orphanage in Honduras. McClure,along with 16 students and four adults, will deliver the donationto the orphanage this summer. The chicken coop will give youngpeople in the orphanage an opportunity to earn income for theorphanage to help pay for daily necessities. The name YUDA isderived from AYUDA, the Spanish word for help.

Moms receive herb gardens

VISTA — Faith Lutheran School’s Melissa D’Agostini and herthird-grade class planted herb gardens May 8 for moms as Mother’sDay gifts. D’Agostini provided the plants, containers and soil andthe students planted and watered the basil, thyme and cilantro.

Team earns state finalist spot

VISTA — Guajome Park Academy middle school students VeronicaAgosto, Manny Amial and Matt Luerman — along with their teacher,Lisa Davis — were recently named California’s state finalist teamin the “Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge.” The project bythe Guajome Park team, called Water Wizards, focused on creating anawareness campaign around water conservation. The team is one of 22state finalist teams, from which two national winning teams and onegrand prize-winning team will be chosen and announced May 18. Visitwecanchange.com.

Panther Dancers and Dance 3 to perform

VISTA — The Vista High School’s Panther Dancers and Dance 3will present “One World” at 6 p.m. May 27 and 6 and 8 p.m. May 28at the school’s Panther Playhouse, One Panther Way. Boosters to hold rummage sale

VISTA — Vista High School Baseball Boosters will hold a rummagesale from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 in the parking lot at the VistaMagnet Middle School, at the corner of East Vista Way and EscondidoAvenue. Proceeds will benefit the baseball program.

Students return with medals

POWAY — Nine students from Poway High School recently competedat the California Skills USA State Competition on April 21-23 atthe Fresno Convention Center.

Here’s a list of medal-winning students: Johnny Griffith, NicoAlvarez, Jerry McDonald and Matt Keeler, bronze medals forIntroduction to Automotive Technology; Shannon Pierson, gold medalfor food and beverage service; and William Golden and KeriCavender, gold medals in a new career field called mechantronics.Knowledge and skills utilizing pneumatics, electronics, computerprogramming, engineering and hydraulics were part of thecompetition. Students who received gold medals will compete in theSkill USA 2009 National Conference on June 21-26 in Kansas City,Mo.

New summer programs to start

CARLSBAD — The Carlsbad Educational Foundation will offersummer classes for kindergartners through eighth-graders June 22through July 17. The 23 classes run for one, two or four weeks witha focus on science, music and the arts. The classes, available forstudents from Carlsbad and neighboring communities, will take placeat Pacific Rim Elementary School, 1100 Camino De Las Ondas.Proceeds will benefit foundation grants for music, science andinnovative programs in partnership with the Carlsbad Unified SchoolDistrict this fall. Here’s a sampling of classes:

– Musical Theater: Develop vocal and drama techniques that willculminate in a musical production

– Mad Science: A variety of science-based workshops coveringmagnetism, chemical reactions, electricity, minerals, bugs, weatherand more.

– Kinder Bootcamp: An introduction to kindergarten. Studentswill practice basic classroom skills along with reading, writingand math.

PTA to hold festival fundraiser

CARLSBAD — The Jefferson Elementary School’s Parent TeacherAssociation will host a multicultural festival from 10 a.m. to 3p.m. May 16. Activities will include dances and songs performed bystudents of each grade level, games and prizes. Thirteen-yearPrincipal Carol VanVooren will deliver her farewell speech at 1:35p.m. Proceeds will benefit the student body. Admission is free.Food and craft venders will have items for sale.
