Air Force chiefs study future of C-130 base The Associated Press LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Sen. Tim Hutchinson, R-Ark. was told last week that more than one option is being looked at concerning the future of the Little Rock Air Force Base, his spokeswoman said. Air Force four-star generals met Thursday at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois and were briefed on a study proposing changes in the operation of the Air Force's C-130 cargo airplane fleet.
The Little Rock base is the home of the largest C-130 fleet in the world. The Air Force didn't issue any information about the meeting until Friday and then released few details. "There are some minor modifications in the programming phase that will be worked out," said Capt. Dani Johnson, a spokesman at the Little Rock base. "Once this is done, the Mobility Air Force commanders will present the report to Air Staff.
After the presentation, it will be releasable to the public early next year," Johnson said. Sue Hensley, Hutchinson's spokeswoman, said her office knew the briefing took place Thursday. "We haven't seen the report, yet," she said. "It is our understanding that the release of the study might not be made until February when the Air Force has reviewed it." Hutchinson met with top Air Force leadership Thursday and was told there was more than one option presented concerning plans for Little Rock, Hensley said. "Right now, we just don't know what those options were," she said.
Rep. Vic Snyder, said a proposed cutback of the C-130 training school at the Little Rock Air Force Base, but not a reduction in aircraft, is apparently included in the report. "That is the primary option concerning Little Rock Air Force Base in the study as I understand it," Snyder said Thursday. The Little Rock base has for years been home to the Department of Defense, C-130 training school, where all C-130 air crews in the U.S. military as well as NATO nations receive basic C-130 flight training.
Approximately 2,400 students a year attend the school. Snyder said the study includes a proposal for parceling out up to 75 percent of the aircrew training to Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard units in Nashville, Keesler Air Force Base, Dobbins Air Force Base, and the 189th Air National Guard at the Little Rock base. That proposal means that Little Rock could be left training only 600 to 700 students a year. But the plan calls for leaving four C-130 squadrons at the Little Rock base, Snyder said. Instead of the base having two operational squadrons and two assigned to the training school, it would have four operational squadrons, he said.
"This would mean that the base would be an operational base instead of a training base," Snyder said. "It could mean more people and more airplanes for the base, but I haven't seen the study, nor anything in writing Snyder said he talked with military sources after Thursday's meeting and was told that some of the generals were not in favor of the proposal.
