He grew tired of the Superdome in New Orleans. Single white male makes his marquee By Joan Treadway The Associated Press NEW ORLEANS The billboard looms over Interstate 10, right where eastbound traffic swoops left to skirt the Superdome. Prime space, at a hefty price: $4,000 for a month. But for a 44-year-old roofing contractor the "successful SWM" behind the city's largest personal ad it's a small price to pay if it means never again having to darken the door of a singles bar.
"I've been in New Orleans almost a year and I've tried the bar scene. The people are not serious, not sincere and are just looking for a one-night stand," said the transplanted Texan now living in east Jefferson Parish. "Roice he prefers not to publicize his last name for fear of harassing phone calls to his home gets quite specific about his priorities on the tape that answers calls to the number on the billboard. From Staff Reports DEATHS Caddo Parish Webb, Dorothy Dodd, 95, of Shreveport died Thursday; services at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, Frost chapel; burial in Forest Park Cemetery; arrangements by Osborn Funeral Home.
Lincoln Parish Guilbert, Ruth Faulk, 71, of Simsboro died Sunday; graveside services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Simsboro City Cemetery, Simsboro; memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Simsboro; arrangements by Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Ruston. Hammons, John 94, of Dubach died Sunday; services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Baptist for a lasting relationship and perhaps even marriage should be between 25 and 37 and "intelligent." But lest that narrows the field too much, Roice is prepared to be flexible.
Inquiry from parties a tad older than 37 will be reviewed, and Roice's criteria for intelligence are likewise forgiving: She needs to have "a good sense of humor and a lot of common sense," he said. Anything else? She should be health-conscious, Roice said. To screen the wheat from the chaff, Roice set up a separate phone line and hired a friend to screen calls, upping his investment by another $2,000, not counting wine and flowers. With the billboard ad nearing the end of its one-month run, about 50 calls have been logged, 10 of them clearly prank calls, in some cases from men pretending to be women, Roice said. His friend ruled out another 30 as not his type.
"She didn't tell me why, but I trust her," Roice said. The final 10 she judged to be "quality calls" women with whom there was a chance of compatibility. Roice is not bashful when it comes to appraising his own attributes. "I'm a good catch. A frog waiting to be turned into a prince," he said, referring to the cartoon frog depicted on his billboard.
He has done well not only through his roofing work but also from owning and training race horses, he said. As for his character, he said, "I'm honest, hardworking, spontaneous and I've never met a stranger." A marriage ended in divorce eight years ago, but he bears his former wife no ill will, Roice said, and she bore him no children. If the bars are a turnoff, what about local organizations for single people? The billboard approach yields better results and saves time, he said. And if nothing pans out? In love as in life, persistence is everything, and Roice remains hopeful.
