"Chief" Palmer, 68, of 522 Holyoke an Air Force Junior ROTC instructor at Central High School in Springfield, and a retired Air Force chief master sergeant, died on Tuesday at home. He started his career with the schools 19 years ago, and developed the ROTC program at the school and in the community. Both he and the program received many awards, including citations from the Massachusetts Army National Guard.

Palmer was named an outstanding JROTC instructor. He received the Alexander B. Mapp Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to the community last year. He also was cited by the Urban League. He was the parade marshal for the 1987 Springfield Veterans Day parade.

Born in Sharon, he lived in Lakeville, before coming here 20 years ago. He was a World War II veteran, and served for more than 30 years in supplies and management. He was president of the TriCounty Baseball League, and was active in area baseball for the past 20 years. He received the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Award of Distinction. He was a member of the NCO Club at Westover.

He was a direc- Peter Chrusciel WESTFIELD Peter Chrusciel, 73, of 53 Union a retired employee of H.B. Smith died on Monday in Noble Hospital. He retired in 1977. Born in Poland, he lived here for 36 years, and was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church. He leaves his wife, the former Wladyslawa Szczepanski; two sons, Stephen of Westfield, and Henry, serving with the Navy in Washington, D.C.; six daughters, Sophie Wojciechowski of New York state, and Stacia Chrusciel, Wanda Chrusciel, Christine Chrusciel and Ann Lemere of Westfield, and Helen Costa of Ludlow; two brothers and two sisters in Poland, and eight grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be on Thursday morning at Czelusniak Funeral Home and the church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are this afternoon and evening. Edna M. Damario SPRINGFIELD Edna M.

(Beauregard) Damario, 84, of 23 Pioneer Way, a 30-year employee of the former Springfield plant of Westinghouse Electric died on Sunday in Mercy Hospital. She retired in 1968. Born in Gardner, she lived here most of her her life. She was a former communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, and most recently a communicant of St.

Catherine of Siena Church. She was a member of the Springfield Golden Age Club. Her husband, Camillo Damario, died in 1959. She leaves three sisters, Yvonne M. Rouleau, with whom she lived, Evelyn Thibeault of Westfield and Priscilla Arcand of Springfield, and several nieces and nephews.

A stepson, Thomas Damario, died last year. The funeral will be. on Friday morning at St. Pierre Springfield Funeral Chapels and St: Catherine of Siena Church, with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Mary Beatrice Pappas Mary Bea- trice (DeJesus) Pappas, 77, of 698 Westhampton Road, and formerly of the Walter Salvo House, died on Monday at home. Born in Holyoke, she attended Chicopee schools, and moved here many years ago. She was a communicant of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Holyoke, and belonged to the Eagles here. Her husband, Daniel Pappas, died in 1986.

She leaves a son, George of Atlanta, a daughter, Marianne Pappas LaBarge of Northampton, with whom she lived; a brother, Alfred DeJesus of Bel-Air, three sisters, Minnie DaMato of Enfield, and Lucinda Cadette and Irene LaRose of Northampton; five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. LaBonte, 85, formerly of Green Street, a retired employee of the former Moore Drop Forge died on Sunday in Holyoke Hospital. He retired in 1973. Born in St. Charles, Quebec, he lived in Fairview from 1957. He was a communicant of St.

Anne's Church, and a member of the Moose here. His wife, the former Irene B. Jasmin, died in 1967, and his son, Robert, in 1941. He leaves two brothers, Lucien and Amedee of St. Charles; two sisters, Laura Therieault of West Springfield and Sister Bernadette of St.

Paquette, 73, of 95 Main Three Rivers, a 42-year dietitian at Tambrands died on Tuesday in Wing Memorial Hospial after a short illness. She retired in 1985. Born' here, she lived here all of her life, and was a communicant of St. Anne's Church. She belonged to Club 55 of Palmer.

She leaves a sister, Lucille McLaughlin of Three Rivers, and a niece, Tamara Walker of Three Rivers. ETHEL TERRY TRICE Ethel T. Trice, Md. deaconess LANDOVER, Md. Ethel (O'Neil) Terry Trice, 68, of Landover died here on Aug. 22.

Born in Springfield, she was graduated with honors from Classical High School, and moved to Greater Washington, D.C., in the early 1960s. She moved to Maryland in 1968. She was a deaconess of the Shiloh Baptist Church, and a member of its Nurses Unit and Circle 4. Her first husband was the late E. Edward Terry.

She leaves a daughter, Olief "Bunny" Terry-Iracks; two adopted daughters, Blanche L. Bowman and Lora K. Yancy of the Washington area; three sisters, Carrie M. Leak, Geneva Chambers and Bertha B. Cooke of Springfield, and six grandchildren.

Palmer of Greenwich, and Gretchen F. Palmer, one of Diet Pepsi's UhHuh girls, of Los Angeles, four brothers, John of Lakeville, Walter Jr. of Storrs, William of Bloomfield, and Robert of East Hartford; three grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Kielb, 83, of Chicopee, a retired 35-year inspector at Savage Arms Corp. in Westfield, died on Saturday in a local nursing home after a short illness. He retired in 1975. A lifelong resident, he was a communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr.

He was a founder of the Pastime Athletic Club, and a member of machinists and bartenderss union locals, and the Savage Arms 25-Year Club. He excelled in sports, and formerly played basketball for the Polish Falcons. He leaves his wife of 59 years, the former Mae R. Michalski; a son, William K. and daughter, Constance Denoncourt, both of Chicopee; a brother, Frank Kielb; three sisters, Julia Rattelle, Adele Breton and Bertha Franczek of Chicopee, two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Weldon, 69, of Merrimac Avenue, a 17-year city police officer, died on Tuesday in Municipal Hospital. He retired from the Police Department many years ago. He was also the owner of the Dory Lounge on St. James Avenue. A lifelong resident of the city, he was a graduate of the former Springfield Trade School, and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

Weldon was a Navy veteran of World War II, and belonged to the John Boyle O'Reilly Club. He was a former member of Elks Lodge 61. He leaves his wife, the former Claire T. Doty; two sons, Edward J. and Christopher J.

of Springfield: three daughters, Maureen Weldon of Belchertown, and Valorie Egan and Audrey Scanlon of Springfield; a brother, Raoul of Chicopee; a sister, Ruth Weldon of Springfield, and 10 grandchildren. She was a registered pharmacist, and spent 65 years in religious service. She was a pharmacist for .12 years at St. Luke's Hospital in Pittsfield, spent three years at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester, and served for four years at the Providence Motherhouse. She also worked a year as a part-time pharmacist at Flynn's Drug Store in Pittsfield.

She also worked in the Providence Mother- Alton E. McConnell PHILLIPSTON Alton E. McConnell, 57, of Phillipston, a retired attendant for New England Residential Services in Holden, died on Sunday at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester. He retired last year.

Born in Winchendon, he was graduated from Murdock High School in 1954, and lived here for many years. He was an Air Force veteran. He leaves a daughter, Linda S. Van Horn of Antrim, N.H.; a brother, Roland J. Jr.

of Winchendon; three sisters, Phyllis J. Colburn and Joyce A. Keib of West Springfield, and Thelma E. Whitney of Ware, and two grandchildren. The funeral will be on Thursday afternoon at Snow-Ladeau Funeral Home, with burial in the Riverside Cemetery, both in Winchendon.

She was also an artist, and painted in oils and watercolors. She leaves a brother, Nelson Carpentier of Southbridge, and a sister, Viola Chapdelaine of Manchester, N.H. The funeral will be this morning at the Providence Motherhouse and Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel, with burial at the Calvary Cemetery in Brightside. Dillon Funeral Home is in charge. Peter Salata ADAMS Peter Salata, 85, of 40 East Jordan a retired employee of the former Brightwater Paper died on Monday in Pittsfield's Berkshire Medical Center. He worked previously at Berkshire Fine Spinning and retired 20 years ago. He was born in Kalisz, Poland, and attended schools there. He was in the Polish Army in World War II, and was interned in Germany. He settled in Adams in 1950, and attended St.

Stanislaus Kostka Church. He leaves his wife, the former Olga Kaczalowska; a stepdaughter, Jane Brozyna of Adams; a brother, Ignacy of Cleveland, Ohio; three step-grandchildren, and a step-great-grandson. A memorial service will be conducted at the convenience of the family, and burial will be later in the Bellevue Cemetery.
